New Open Access Academic Journal for Caribbean Studies

Karib: Nordic Journal for Caribbean Studies (ISSN 2387-6743) is a peer-reviewed open-access journal for research articles. The focus is on literature and literary theory, but we welcome articles with a cross-disciplinary approach seeking to engage in dialogue with various fields, notably history, anthropology, art, aesthetics, performance studies, cultural studies, and history of ideas, in order to promote high quality research on contemporary and historical Caribbean topics.

Based at the Department of Languages at Uppsala University and published with Stockholm University Press, the journal accepts articles in the region’s three major languages: English, Spanish, and French./Karib/is published online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year, thus insuring a swift publication process. Articles are submitted on-line and are made available as soon as they are accepted by the Editorial Committee.

We invite researchers and doctoral students to submit articles on any topic corresponding to the journal’s area of interest. But we also issue calls for papers on specific topics which will be published in a special section on Karib’s website. For this year, we are opening a special call for articles: “Curating the Caribbean: Museum Practice, History and Identity Formation”.

Dieses Buch geht von der These aus, dass die koloniale Thematik im frankokaribischen Roman der 1980er Jahre bis heute omnipräsent ist, um die undokumentierte Vergangenheit der Region literarisch zu rekonstruieren. So belegt die Studie mit einem Korpus von 25 Romanen in quantitativer und qualitativer Hinsicht, dass zur Darstellung von kolonialer Geschichte eine große Varietät an Erzählformen auf allen narratologischen Niveaus existiert. Die Autorin zeigt, dass literarische Geschichts(re)konstruktionen in den frankokaribischen Überseedepartements durchaus diskursbestimmend sind, obschon (noch) kein einheitliches Geschichtsverständnis nachgewiesen werden konnte, das allen Bewohnern gleichermaßen eine identitäre Verortung im kolonialhistorischen Kontext ermöglicht.

En partant de la thèse que le sujet de l’histoire coloniale est jusqu’à aujourd’hui omniprésent dans la littérature antillaise francophone et dans le but de reconstruire, par la littérature, un passé régional peu documenté, cette recherche qualitative et quantitative, basée sur l’étude de 25 romans, a permis de démontrer que la représentation de l’histoire coloniale se manifeste par une grande variété de formes narratives sur tous les niveaux narratologiques. En effet, les discours sur l’histoire coloniale caribéenne et sa représentation littéraire sont prédominés par une écriture révisionniste et reconstructive. Pourtant, une compréhension consensuelle de l’histoire coloniale, qui unit tous les habitants de la région antillaise en une identité historique collective, ne peut pas (encore) être détectée.

“In this fascinating ethnographic study of a trans-local community in Guyana, Kloß shows how intimacy, touch, and exchange are established between Guyanese Hindus and the Indo-Guyanese diaspora through the sending and receiving of Indian style clothing. The transnational exchange of garments creates a kind of distant proximity through the material touching of bodies, textiles, and deities, while also distancing Guyanese Hindus from both ‘African’ Guyanese and from ‘Indian Indians’. This intimate perspective on women’s trans-local practices of religious community and familial fashioning brings to light exciting new ways of thinking about mobility, materiality, place-making, and embodied meanings and actions amongst dispersed migrants.
